International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD)

Filed under:  Spring Migration  by:  Craig Curtis

Each year, on the second Saturday of May, International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) is recognized.

This year, it is presented as “Go Wild, Go Birding!”

International Migratory Bird Day is a day of international awareness and celebration of a bird’s migration as they journey from their wintering grounds in South America, Central America, and Mexico to return to their North American and Canadian breeding grounds.

International Migratory Bird Day raises awareness of bird conservation efforts by means of hikes and bird watching, and educates the public through events, festivals, and other programs.

The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center initiated IMBD in 1993, and it continues to run through Environment for the Americas.

To this day, International Migratory Bird Day maintains its focus on the significance of migration.

This year’s theme, “Go Wild, Go Birding!”, engages youths and their families in fun-filled learning about birds, bird conservation, and bird watching.

Watch for an event in your area where you can join in International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday May 14!
